To celebrate the launch of a special edition of a Chimurenga Chronic – Brandfort: Liberation Capital (1977-86) we are proud to present a live performance by A Semblance, an experimental band headed by Cape Town based musician and historian Asher Gamedze. Through improvisation, A Semblance will perform a tribute to Winnie Madikizela-Mandela’s cultural work during the period of her banishment in Brandfort from 1977-86, as a form of expanding on the rich legacy of musical tributes to her during the Brandfort years.

Banished to Brandfort in 1977, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela noted that this act, carried out by the apartheid authorities, was intended “to bury me forever.” However, it was her presence that ultimately repositioned the small rural town in the Free State as a centre for black radicalism.
