‘They go say I don’t be woman!’
With Fela being referred to as ‘the last political musician,’ this show explores how the male figure is so often centred in music. Starting by unpacking the term ‘political music,’ this is a conversation on how music can become divided into gendered binaries due to masculine definitions of power and intellect. We attempt to rectify this by centering the feminine across different genres and looking at how women from the African Diaspora have used music as a weapon.
